Tragedy struck a New Jersey community when a rain-swollen river swept away three children, leaving one boy dead and a massive search underway for another child.
It started just before 6:30 p.m. on a Wednesday evening at Pulaski Park in Passaic. Three children—a 10-year-old boy, his 11-year-old sister, and a 10-year-old female friend—ended up in the Passaic River. Heavy rainfall days prior had left the water levels dangerously high and the currents deceptively fast.
Witnesses across the water spotted the children vanishing almost immediately upon entering the river and dialed 911 within seconds. A local good Samaritan jumped into the rushing water to try and rescue them. The current and depth proved too powerful, forcing the bystander back.
Amid the chaos, an act of extraordinary heroism emerged. The 11-year-old sister managed to pull herself out of the water and return to the park, where she was reunited with her parents. According to Passaic Mayor Hector Lora, her survival came down to her brother's final moments.
"In conversing with her, her account, the little boy may have saved her life," Mayor Lora stated. As he went under, the 10-year-old boy pushed his sister toward the rocks, enabling her to climb out to safety.
The Search Operation Unfolds
Emergency response units flooded the area within minutes. More than two dozen marine units from multiple agencies deployed boats, drones, and sonar equipment to scan the murky depths.
Search teams recovered the body of the 10-year-old boy late Wednesday night, approximately 30 feet out and 50 feet away from where the children entered. Officials noted that the search for the remaining 10-year-old girl transitioned into a recovery operation as daylight broke.
Investigators point to a boat ramp near the park as the likely entry point. When covered by high water, the ramp creates a false sense of security, appearing longer and shallower than it actually is. Chief Trentacost of the local fire department explained that the children quickly slipped deeper due to the swift current and high water level.

The local community rallied instantly. Overnight and into the morning, family members and concerned residents scoured the riverbanks with flashlights, refusing to sleep as they awaited news of the missing girl.
Relatives described the missing 10-year-old girl as a bright, artistic child who loved doing nails and cherished everyone around her. Family members expressed agonizing heartbreak while holding onto hope.
