Cownose rays get their name from their distinctive, high-lobed heads that resemble a cow's nose. They feature wingspans stretching up to three feet. They are migratory elasmobranchs. That means they belong to the same broader family as sharks and skates. Yet people constantly misidentify them.

When thousands of hobbyists fly drones over Hamptons beaches every sunny weekend, you get more documentation. You get higher visibility. You capture rare behavioral moments that used to happen completely unseen by humans standing on dry land.

Marine scientists are actually thrilled about this shift. Estimating population numbers for animals that travel in massive, fast-moving schools is notoriously difficult. Aerial drone footage gives researchers a new tool to study abundance, schooling behavior, and near-surface movements without stressing the animals with physical tags or nets.

What You Should Do When You Spot Them

If you happen to be walking along a New York or Mid-Atlantic beach and spot dark shapes moving through the surf, keep a few practical steps in mind:

  • Don't panic. They are cownose rays, not sharks. They pose zero threat to humans unless you deliberately step on them or harass them in shallow water.
  • Give them space. If you're piloting a drone, don't divebomb the school. Keep your altitude reasonable to avoid altering their natural swimming and migration paths.
  • Look at the wingtips. Notice how the fins break the surface rhythmically rather than violently thrashing like a predatory fish.
  • Appreciate the ecosystem. Their presence means local bivalve populations and water conditions are supporting a rich coastal food web right off our shores.
