Wounded himself, he refused medical evacuation until he had treated other injured men and helped secure the position.

Ann Henderson, Kathryn Charette Donovan, and Laura Charette Bennett—served as the ship's official sponsors, breaking the ceremonial bottle against the hull in front of roughly 1,500 shipbuilders, family members, and military officials.

Inside the Flight III Upgrade

Beyond the historic namesake, the ship itself represents a massive leap forward in naval architecture. This is the second Flight III destroyer built at the Bath facility, out of 43 total destroyers constructed at the Maine yard for the Navy.

Flight III ships aren't just minor refreshes. They carry the AN/SPY-6(V)1 Air and Missile Defense Radar (AMDR). This radar system changes everything about how a surface combatant detects threats. Older destroyers were brilliant multi-mission workhorses, but Flight III variants pack the raw processing power to track ballistic missiles and simultaneous air-breathing threats in saturated combat environments.

Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao called the vessel a cornerstone of the nation's new fleet structure during his principal address at the dry dock. Bath Iron Works currently juggles several other Flight III hulls in various stages of construction, including the future Louis H. Wilson Jr. (DDG 126), Quentin Walsh (DDG 132), John E. Kilmer (DDG 134), Richard G. Lugar (DDG 136), J. William Middendorf (DDG 138), and Thomas G. Kelley (DDG 140).

The shipyard's president, Charles F. Krugh, summed up the prevailing ethos at the yard with a simple phrase repeated by generations of Maine shipbuilders: "Bath Built is Best Built."
