The Real Story Behind the Mounds

The architects behind this monumental landscape are Syntermes dirus, a species of soil-feeding termites. But here is the catch: the mounds are not homes. They are garbage dumps.

When researchers collected soil samples from the centers of these structures and used optically stimulated luminescence dating, the results revealed that the dirt was pushed to the surface anywhere from 690 to 3,820 years ago. This means some of these earthen piles have been accumulating for nearly four millennia, rivaling the age of ancient human civilizations.

Each mound contains roughly 50 cubic metres of soil. Multiply that by 200 million, and you get more than 10 cubic kilometres of excavated earth. Scientists note that this massive earth-moving project equals the volume of about 4,000 Great Pyramids of Giza. It stands as the largest known example of ecosystem engineering by a single insect species in history.

Why Dig Tunnels Without Nests

So why would millions of insects spend thousands of years digging up billions of tons of dirt just to pile it into random heaps? The answer lies in survival, hunger, and geography.

The caatinga forests of northeastern Brazil experience harsh, seasonally dry periods where leaf-fall happens episodically. Food on the surface is scarce and unpredictable. To survive, Syntermes dirus built a massive, interconnected subterranean labyrinth of tunnels. This permanent underground transit system allowed workers and soldiers to travel safely across the landscape to find scattered leaves and organic debris without exposing themselves to predators on the surface.

As the insects carved out this sprawling underground network, they had to put the excavated soil somewhere. Transporting millions of tons of dirt back up to the surface was the only logical choice. Over thousands of years, the repeated dumping of waste soil created uniform, cone-shaped piles.

The Mystery of Uniform Spacing

What baffles biologists just as much as the age of the mounds is how they are distributed. If you look at aerial maps of the region, the mounds aren't randomly scattered. They are spaced out with eerie precision, sitting an average of about 20 metres apart from one another.

At first, scientists suspected that intense territorial competition between rival colonies forced the termites to maintain strict boundaries. However, experiments proved otherwise. Workers and soldiers found near the mounds showed zero aggression toward each other when they met. Aggression only flared up when researchers introduced termites from colonies located 50 kilometres away.

Instead of warfare, the neat spacing comes down to self-organization. As the insects expanded their underground tunnels to source food and discard waste efficiently, the physical layout naturally fell into a steady, repeating spatial pattern.

Nature rarely builds in straight lines or perfect grids, yet these tiny termites accidentally engineered a landscape so vast and orderly that it can be clearly seen from space. Next time you look at a supposedly simple anthill or termite nest, remember that appearances can deceive. Sometimes, a mountain of dirt is just the trash heap of an ancient, underground empire.
